Gutters Clogged? Your Home Could Suffer

The seasons are changing, which means chillier weather, scarves, cider…and tons of falling leaves.  It’s a lovely time of year, but it also comes with a new to-do list.

Keeping your gutters clear and clean is important . Clogged gutters can cause a ton of problems for your home and yard.

What Damage Can Clogged Gutters Cause?

You might assume that rain will wash away any leaves that land in your gutter. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Often, leaves will become soggy and stuck in your gutter, creating financial woes for you. Some of the most common damage caused by leaf-clogged gutters include:

  • Foundation problems: Water from your gutter should run away from your home. When it falls closer to the building because of a clogged gutter, your foundation can be damaged. This is very costly and a worst-case scenario.
  • Flooded basements: Once water pools around the base of your home, cracked foundations are not the only threat. You may also experience a flooded basement and all of the damage that entails, such as mold, lost property and flooring damage.
  • Ruined landscaping: You spend a lot of money on flower beds and landscaping arrangements. Clogged gutters that drain water incorrectly or wind up pushing clogged leaves toward the ground can drown your garden and ruin your landscaping.
  • Insect issues: Bugs love to congregate in moist areas, such as flooded gutters, where they can hide and lay eggs amid clogged leaves. You may wind up with termites, mosquitoes and other annoying pests.

How Can I Prevent Gutter and Home Damage?

You can use gutter covers to prevent the collection of leaf clogs altogether, which may be your best bet if you experience frequent clogs. You can also clean your gutters by climbing up on a ladder and scooping out the leaves, then flushing the gutter with a garden hose.

Clogged gutters can quickly become a headache. The worst-case scenario is a foundation crack, but you may also wind up with a ruined landscaping and an ant infestation.
