Fall Roof Safety Tips: Pre-Winter List 2017

Don’t forget to check the roof when preparing your home for the winter months. It’s an easy task to overlook, but not taking the time to check and care for the roof can lead to damage and expensive repairs. Here are four tips for preparing your roof for the winter to keep it safe and secure.

1. Clean the gutters

One of the easiest things to do to get your roof ready for winter as well as one of the most important is to clean your gutters. It’s easy for leaves and other debris to accumulate in your gutters. If you don’t clean your gutters regularly, they will clog and cause the water to run off your house in ways that can damage your roof, siding, and trim. Also, once the rain and snow start, the added weight of the wet leaves can cause the gutters to come unhinged, causing even more repair costs.

2. Clear debris from the roof

All manner of debris can accumulate on your roof throughout the year. It’s important to move leaves, small branches, and other detritus from the roof as even small amounts of debris can cause damage, mold and other issues that can be costly to fix. If you feel comfortable climbing and walking around on your roof, you can get up there and remove the debris yourself with a broom or leaf blower. If you don’t feel comfortable cleaning the roof yourself, give us a call, and we can handle it for you.

3. Check for any damage

While up on the roof clearing debris check for any damage. Walk the entire length to see if you see any concerns that need to be addressed. Check for holes, broken or missing shingles or any with frayed or missing edges. Also look for any damage around the edge of the roof, chimney, and skylights. If any damage is found be sure to call us to have it fixed, so the accumulation of rain and snow during the winter months won’t make matters worse.

4. Check insulation

Damaged or wet insulation can increase your energy bill significantly during the winter months. Proper insulation means your home will heat and cool properly. If the insulation has deteriorated or sustained any damage in any way, that means there is very little protection for your house from the elements, which can lead to potential leaks, mold, and other damage. You’ll want to replace the insulation as soon as possible to prevent any potential rise in energy costs.
